The ocean near Drake Bay is filled with abundant and varied marine species. Isla del Caņo is home to many of the same species living in the Galapagos Islands.
The waters offshore (known as the Costa Rican Thermal Convection Dome if you really want to know) teem with dolphins, migrating whales (for several months each year), mantas, sea turtles and many more animals.
Although we make no promises or exaggerated claims that you will actually be able to watch the dolphins and the whales in the open ocean, we nearly always encounter fascinating creatures and our guests sometimes have entered the water close to humpback whales and dolphins. This year the Costa Rican government has prohibited close interactions since some boats in the past have pursued these lovely animals far too agressively, and we fully support this policy.
There are few experiences more beautiful than to have a mother humpback whale and her calf swimming a short distance from the boat. Many guests report this tour is the highlight of their stay at Pirate Cove.
